Course Outline

200 Hour Hatha Yoga Certification

Techniques, Training and Practice ( 80 contact hrs - 20 non-contact hrs)

Building from the foundation, this category will emphasize on proper techniques, its profound knowledge and understanding and the ability to naturally structure a class. Techniques presented will include asanas( Hatha Yoga), pranayama, meditation, mantra, mudra, bandha and the art of safely sequencing. The use of Sanskrit terminology will be used throughout training. Practical hours within the group will include discussions, physical practice, proper cueing, demonstrating, modifying and sharing benefits and contraindications of each technique.

Teaching Methodology (20 contact hrs - 10 non-contact hrs)

From our solid foundation, we build the teacher! Using clear and simple cues, we learn to safely transition through sequencing, offering proper props and therapeutic hands-on adjustments. Communication and the relationship between teacher and student will be discussed and practised within the group. Students will work with every participant in the class to practice and observe the different styles, personalities, dynamics… A journal will be kept to note the different challenges and beneficial approaches presented. Students will offer Karma yoga within their community and note, from a chart, their experience. A critical observation will be documented by students observing and participating in these classes.

Anatomy and Physiology (30 contact hours)

An important understanding of anatomy and physiology will solidify and prepare teachers to understand the human body, its movements and how it relates to the asana practice. The energy body will be included through the study of chakras, nadis, pranayama,… and their relation to the anatomical self, through yoga. In addition, the steady and crucial role of breath throughout sequencing will be observed and practised. Once again, props will be presented and discussed throughout the studies, to master safety and alignment as a teacher. Therapeutic and restorative studies will prepare the students for contraindications commonly noted in cancer, cancer treatments, spinal injuries, depression, hypotonia, hypertonia, obesity, heart conditions…. A discussion will empower students on how to approach clients with challenging diagnosis, communicating with the medical team, offering modifications without lessening the value of your client’s practice...

Yoga Philosophy, Lifestyle, Ethics (20 contact hours- 10 non-contact hrs)

A focus will be given to the reading and discussion of ancient yoga texts, yoga’s history and lifestyle. Patanjali's 8 limbs of yoga will be studied and students will be asked to personally relate to these in a written essay. Hatha yoga, its meaning, how it applies to the entire self, physically, emotionally and energetically and its relationship with pranayama will be significant throughout this training. Documentaries will be watched by students and a thorough discussion will follow. Student and teacher relationship within the class and in the community will be discussed. Community involvement and karma yoga will be encouraged and noted in a journal.

Practicum (10 hours)

Practice, and guide students through pranayama and meditation. Through professional communication, students will share and receive constructive feedback.Throughout the program, students will benefit from regular discussions and practice of all aspects of the curriculum. Classes will be taught by students, within the group, and graded on the ability to properly demonstrate, cue, plan and teach warm-ups appropriate to asana Our ultimate goal is to seed and grow knowledge, curiosity, professionalism, strength and flexibility as a teacher. A natural comfort zone as a teacher will be reached throughout this Journey.
